E-Numbers to Avoid in Pregnancy — A Practical Watchlist
No authorised E-number carries an official 'avoid in pregnancy' instruction in normal foods — but these are the additive groups most worth moderating while pregnant, and why.
Benzoates (E210–E213) and sulphites (E220–E228) are declared allergens that can trigger asthma and sensitivity reactions — pregnancy doesn't increase that risk, but reactions are more disruptive when pregnant. Nitrites and nitrates (E249–E252) mark out cured and processed meats, a category the NHS already advises caution with in pregnancy. Aspartame (E951) is confirmed safe at normal intakes by EFSA and the NHS, with one absolute exception: women with PKU. And as a general rule, a diet low in ultra-processed food is automatically low in all of these.
