E-Numbers and Pregnancy — What's Safe and What to Watch

The reassuring headline: authorised food additives are assessed for safety across the whole population, including pregnancy, and there is no E-number that pregnant women are officially told to avoid in normal foods. But a few groups are worth knowing about, either for sensible moderation or because they matter for specific conditions.

Worth watching in pregnancy: benzoates (E210–E213) and sulphites (E220–E228) are allergens and can trigger reactions in sensitive people; nitrites and nitrates (E249–E252) are the additives in cured meats, which the NHS already advises limiting in pregnancy for other reasons (listeria and toxoplasmosis risk in some products); and aspartame (E951) is safe in pregnancy at normal intakes according to EFSA and the NHS — the exception is women with the rare inherited condition PKU, who must avoid it entirely.

For the watchlist version of this guide, see E-numbers to avoid in pregnancy.

The practical advice mirrors general healthy-eating guidance: additives in an otherwise balanced diet are not the risk — heavily processed diets are where both additive intake and the real nutritional concerns concentrate. If you want to minimise additives while pregnant, cooking from fresh ingredients achieves it automatically. Always speak to your midwife or GP about your individual diet.
